ENVIRONMENTAL POLICY STATEMENT

George Yard Shopping Centre is committed to compliance with environmental legislation and pollution prevention and seeks to make continual improvement in achievements in these fields.

We focus on:

  • Waste management and improving waste recycling
  • Improvement of energy efficiency and water usage
  • Prevention of pollution
  • Communicating an awareness and understanding of environmental issues amongst staff, tenants, contractors and members of the public and allowing staff to contribute towards environmental improvements

Recycling

The Centre has been enabling recycling of a considerable proportion of the total waste produced on site for some years. Paper and cardboard are sorted out of the waste stream by tenants and centre staff. Plastic (largely soft sheeted plastic) is also separated, baled and taken by a recycling contractor.

Other elements of waste removed from the waste stream now include all electrical items and all light bulbs. All the remaining waste goes to a sorting site where it is mechanically and hand sorted removing about 80% of the waste.

BABY LOSS AWARENESS WEEK

Baby Loss Awareness Week, between 9th-15th October

At George Yard Shopping Centre, we’re proud to stand alongside Little Wings of Hope in supporting families who have experienced the heartbreak of baby loss.

Little Wings of Hope created a beautiful ribbon display on one of our trees in the centre, a touching space for reflection, remembrance, and hope. Each ribbon represented a precious life, forever loved and never forgotten.

George Yard Bees

We’re proud to share an exciting project that’s been quietly buzzing away behind the scenes. With the expertise of our beekeeper, Tony, we’ve introduced our very own beehive right here in the heart of Braintree.
The result? 100% natural George Yard Honey, produced sustainably, from hive to jar (and even honeycomb), by our incredible bees.
This initiative is about more than just honey: it’s about supporting biodiversity, celebrating local production, and bringing our community closer together.

SUPPORTING THE ROYAL BRITISH LEGION

George Yard Shopping Centre is proud to show its support for The Royal British Legion and the incredible work they do for our Armed Forces community.

This year, we’re joining millions across the UK in honouring those who have served and continue to serve. The Royal British Legion provides vital support to veterans, serving personnel, and their families — from financial assistance and mental health services to employment advice and community connection.

Visitors to George Yard will be able to find official Poppy Appeal collection points throughout the centre, with every donation helping to make a difference in the lives of those who have given so much for our country.

We’re honoured to stand alongside The Royal British Legion in remembering, supporting, and giving back. Together, we can ensure that their vital work continues for generations to come.
