Is there security on-site?
The centre is monitored by a modern CCTV system with high-quality cameras covering key areas to help ensure the safety of visitors, retailers, and staff. In addition to CCTV, there are dedicated security personnel who patrol the shopping centre regularly. George Yard also operates a radio link system, allowing security staff and retailers to communicate quickly and effectively. This system is supported by Essex Police to help create a safe and welcoming environment for everyone.
What are the opening hours for George Yard?
George Yard Shopping Centre is open from 9am to 5pm, Monday to Saturday, and from 10am to 4pm on Sundays. However individual retailers vary. You can find each businesses opening and closing times on each businesses page under our ‘Store A-Z’ page.
Is there free wi-fi?
Yes, George Yard offers free Wi-Fi for visitors throughout the centre.
Are dogs allowed?
Yes, dogs are allowed at George Yard, but there are some guidelines to ensure a pleasant experience for all visitors.
- On a Lead: All dogs must remain on a lead at all times while within the shopping centre.
- Outdoor Areas: Dogs are permitted in outdoor areas such as the bandstand and the surrounding public spaces.
- Indoor Areas: The policy regarding dogs inside the shops may vary. It's advisable to check with individual stores for their specific pet policies.
- Waste Disposal: Please ensure you clean up after your dog and dispose of waste appropriately in the bins provided
- Behaviour: Owners are responsible for their pets' behaviour, ensuring they do not cause disturbances or discomfort to other visitors.
Are there any click and collect services within the centre?
Yes, CEX, WHSmith, Peacocks, Boots and Superdrug all offer click and collect
Do you have disabled bays?
Yes, there is parking for Blue Badge holders in designated disabled bays within the multi-storey car park. To access these spaces, you must display a valid Blue Badge. The car park is conveniently located adjacent to the centre entrance, providing easy access for visitors with mobility needs. Please note that a membership sticker is required to park in these spaces; you can obtain one from the Management Suite. Additionally, the centre provides electric scooters for use within the town centre through Braintree Shopmobility, which can be arranged by contacting the Management Suite.
Can I buy a George Yard gift card?
No, unfortunately not. However, many of the businesses sell gift cards.
Is there a lost and found?
If you have lost any personal belongings inside a business, please contact them directly as each business manages its own lost and found items. If you think you may have lost something in public areas across George Yard (e.g., walkways, car park, or toilets), please check with the George Yard security team at 01376 550373.
How do I get to George Yard by public transport?
By Train
- From London Liverpool Street: Take the Greater Anglia service to Braintree railway station (station code: BTR). The journey typically takes around 1 hour and 15 minutes.
- From Colchester: Board a Greater Anglia train heading towards London Liverpool Street and alight at Witham. At Witham, change to a train on the Braintree branch line to reach Braintree railway station.
From Braintree railway station, it's approximately a 10-minute walk to George Yard Shopping Centre.
By Bus
Several bus services operate in Braintree town centre, with stops near George Yard Shopping Centre:
- Bus Interchange: Located approximately a 6-minute walk from the shopping centre.
- Railway Street: Situated about a 2-minute walk away.
Services such as the X20, 70, 133, and 570 connect various parts of Braintree and surrounding areas to the town centre.
Do you have EV Charging Points available?
Yes, there is electrical charging at George Yard.
These spaces are available at standard parking rates, with overnight charges applicable
Is the parking free?
Parking at George Yard is not free, but it is affordable and offers several cost-saving options.

What to do if you receive a parking ticket?
At George Yard, parking is managed by the North Essex Parking Partnership (NEPP). The ticket will usually include details on how to pay or appeal.
Pay the ticket promptly if you accept it - This helps avoid additional fines or penalties. Payment instructions and deadlines will be on the ticket.
If you believe the ticket was issued in error, you can appeal it - Visit the NEPP website at https://www.braintree.gov.uk/streets-transport-parking/parking-fines/2 to submit an informal challenge online. Provide any evidence to support your case, such as photos or witness statements.
How many car parking spaces are available in the car park?
George Yard has 715 spaces available for customers.
Do you have bike racks or storage areas?
Yes, we provide bike racks for visitors. These are conveniently located at the west end of the centre, near the entrance to the multi-storey car park. Please note that cycling is not permitted within the shopping centre itself for the safety and comfort of all visitors.
Is there a designated play area in the centre?
There isn't a designated play area, but Rae’s Island offers a fantastic space for children to play with a café.
Is George Yard wheelchair accessible?
Yes, George Yard is fully wheelchair accessible. The centre is designed to accommodate visitors with mobility needs, ensuring a comfortable shopping experience for all.
